ChainThink report, on March 13, according to the Financial Times, some European countries, including France, have initiated negotiations with Iran to reach an agreement ensuring safe passage for their vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, thereby restoring energy shipments in the Gulf region.
Three officials familiar with the talks stated that multiple European nations have begun preliminary discussions aimed at resuming oil and gas exports without escalating conflict. Two officials confirmed that France is among the countries involved in these negotiations. Another official mentioned that Italy has also attempted to engage Iran on this issue.
European nations have consistently sought to avoid direct involvement in the conflict, with some criticizing the initial strikes launched by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. However, governments remain deeply concerned about the potential long-term disruption of the strait leading to increased energy costs for businesses and households.
Another official noted that certain European countries have expressed opposition to engaging Iran. UK officials clarified that the United Kingdom has not conducted direct negotiations with Iran regarding passage through the strait. Nevertheless, the UK Foreign Secretary, Cooper, who is currently visiting Saudi Arabia, is discussing ongoing oil supply issues with Gulf states. (Jinshi)
