ChainThink report, March 8: According to 1M AI News, Kate Crawford, who took leadership of OpenAI’s robotics division in November 2024, has resigned over concerns regarding the company’s military engagements. She stated: “This was not an easy decision. Artificial intelligence plays a critical role in national security, but surveillance of U.S. citizens without judicial oversight and lethal autonomous weapons without human authorization are red lines that should have undergone far more rigorous scrutiny. This is about principle, not personal animosity.” Her departure comes amid escalating controversy surrounding AI companies’ divergent stances on the boundaries of their technology’s use by the U.S. military.

Recently, negotiations between the U.S. Department of Defense and Anthropic collapsed after the latter insisted on strict limitations on domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. Shortly thereafter, OpenAI reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy its models within a classified government network.
