View OriginalChainThink report, March 25, 2026: According to 1M AI News monitoring, open-source developer Tommaso De Rossi has released usecomputer, a native CLI desktop automation tool for Zig. This tool operates without requiring a Node.js runtime and enables AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode to directly control desktop mouse and keyboard inputs, as well as capture screenshots. It supports macOS and Linux systems (X11 environment; Wayland compatibility via XWayland).
usecomputer provides CLI commands for screenshot capture, mouse movement/click/drag/scroll, keyboard input, and key combination synthesis. It includes a coordinate mapping system that automatically converts image pixel coordinates into actual screen coordinates. By default, it scales the longer side of captured screenshots to 1568 pixels to fit within model context windows. Additionally, it supports the Kitty Graphics Protocol—once environment variables are configured, screenshots can be directly inlined into the model’s context.
Developer Tommaso De Rossi previously created Playwriter, a browser automation tool that has garnered over 3,200 GitHub stars. The current release of usecomputer was extracted from the original kimaki monorepo and now offers both CLI and Node.js library interfaces. The README includes complete integration examples for OpenAI’s Computer Use Tool and Anthropic’s Computer Use functionality.
