ChainThink report, according to Cointelegraph, a survey by Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) reveals that in February this year, the Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) shut down Polymarket for operating without a gambling license. However, Kalshi, cryptocurrency exchange Hyperliquid, and investment giant Interactive Brokers continue to offer prediction market services to users in the Netherlands.

A Ksa spokesperson warned that the ban on Polymarket extends to similar platforms, with websites akin to Polymarket falling under its regulatory scope and potentially facing sanctions.

Kalshi is actively expanding into the Dutch market, enabling users to place bets on Eredivisie football matches—previously also including Dutch general elections. Hyperliquid, as a decentralized blockchain platform, has recently extended its prediction market services to the Netherlands.

Interactive Brokers positions its products as financial contracts rather than gambling, claiming oversight by the Central Bank of Ireland. However, the Central Bank of Ireland told FD it was unaware of this arrangement and forwarded related inquiries to the Irish Gambling Regulatory Authority. Prediction markets are increasingly facing global regulatory scrutiny.

Last month, Brazil took action against 27 platforms, including Kalshi and Polymarket. Multiple European countries—including France, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, and Portugal—have also implemented bans or penalties against unauthorized platforms.

In the United States, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recently filed lawsuits against Illinois, Arizona, Connecticut, New York, and Wisconsin over jurisdictional authority issues.

A study from the London Business School in April found that only 3% of prediction market participants consistently generate profits, while nearly 70% incur losses.
