ChainThink report, on February 19, 2025, the Swiss Federal Council (Bundesrat) formally approved and submitted the International Automatic Information Exchange (AIA) Expansion bill to parliament, with core components including:

1. Introduction of a new “Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework” (CARF), a standardized reporting mechanism for digital assets;
2. Updates to the existing Financial Account AIA standard (CRS) to align with the demands of the crypto era.

The new regulations will take effect on January 1, 2026, at which point Switzerland will automatically exchange information on blockchain-held assets—including cryptocurrency wallets, exchange accounts, NFTs, and DeFi positions—with participating jurisdictions.

This marks the first time Switzerland fully integrates crypto assets into the global tax transparency framework, signaling the dawn of a more stringent era of cross-border tax compliance for the digital asset industry. Over 100 countries and territories worldwide are expected to follow suit, requiring crypto investors and institutions to prepare accordingly for enhanced KYC and tax reporting obligations.
