On May 15, Nathan McCauley, CEO of crypto bank Anchorage Digital, refuted reports that the company is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at the Consensus 2025 conference in Toronto, calling the reports "nonsense." Previously, Barron's had reported that a money laundering prevention working group under DHS was contacting former employees of the company to learn about its business operations. McCauley stated that the company has confirmed through its lawyers that no investigation is taking place. Anchorage Digital is known for its strict compliance, and it recently obtained the BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) in December, which is one of the most difficult regulatory licenses in the crypto industry.
